Working caregivers and employer health care costs: New insights and innovations for reducing health care costs for employers

Abstract

This study examines the health impact of caring for elderly family members or friends. The study finds that most family caregivers who are otherwise employed experience poorer health and a greater incidence of chronic disease than non-caregivers. Consequently, the health care costs of working family caregivers are 8 percent higher than those of non-caregivers -- a discrepancy that costs U.S. employers an estimated $13.4 billion each year.
